Before I leave for work, can I just say this?

I've been thinking about it the past couple days, and I'm not so sure I can picture "Erik" as a Goth kid in high school anymore. After what he has come to be in draft two, he'd have to have been somewhat of a, I don't know what word is best... those nerdy loner types that just seem a bit off, don't have any friends, can't hold a decent conversation, and are off doing their own thing. For "Erik", he had to have been obsessively studying music or he'd never be what he is when he confronts Lily. He probably still wore dark clothes, maybe some studs, but along with a clunky watch and reading glasses. He'd be ganglier than he is now -- still capable of kicking somebody's ass, but just getting going on the parkour stuff. He'd have bruises from it all over, I bet. XD Still trying to hide his cutting - I picture scars all over his chest, and I think that's where it started for him. Then, when he was out of school, he went completely overboard and started covering his arms. His face, well, I still haven't decided when he even considered that.

Anyway, yes, nerdy loner, passionately perusing the music section of the library but flunking his senior classes because who cares anymore. And of course, he'd have dark circles under his eyes because sleep is not a thing for him.

I like this; it's a bit more unexpected than the goth stuff, and it also allows him to be one of those kids where people (adults) don't necessarily intervene because, on the surface, he looks functional. Flunking, maybe, but in pursuit of a musical dream, and his appearance is low-key and does not confront those around him. Basically, he doesn't give much away outwardly, from what you're saying, and that makes sense to me.

Yes, that's similar to what I was thinking, about him not looking "confrontational" yet. I used to have a hard time imagining him passing Lily in the hall and not being noticed. lol I know this isn't the same as Goth, but there was a small group of Korn fanatics (who dressed accordingly) at my school that were impossible to miss. It just doesn't work if I'm trying to design someone she may have even interacted with once but she never remembered. Also, she is supposed to be a catalyst for him to go the direction he goes -- he was already having power struggles and other problems inwardly and with his family... the hair dye and the dramatic clothes are more like a statement of full rebellion or abandonment of who he was. Plus those clothes just look so much better on him once he works out! He needs the weight he put on to fill out a suit like that and make it elegant, I would say. ;)

And just as an afterthought, although I know that liking one kind of music doesn't mean you can't appreciate others: Goth as a musical genre, while not insufferable, doesn't really seem like something that would push him to study music so intensively. He's probably got a whole list of bands that are less than reputable compared to the classical and the opera that he teaches her, but he wouldn't be so compelled by them as to change his style.

Wah, I don't know why I have to be so interested in this. XD He's like my muse or something.

I dunno; there's a lot of variety in its subgenres - neoclassical darkwave could've got him into classical music, like how Dead Can Dance helped get me into medieval music. But I guess it's also possible that he was one of those kids who grew up with a piano in the house and classically-minded parents, for whom it was always part of the cultural soup...
